Hello,
We are using reclaimed barn board to build a farmhouse style dining room table. We are struggling with what kind, if any, of finish we should but on the table to protect the wood. Do you have any suggestions?
We really like the color and rustic look of the boards and don’t want a super shiny epoxy type finish. Any suggestions you could offer would be wonderful.
We have been googling it and visited a few home improvement stores/paint stores in our area without receiving great answers:)
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
Sincerely,
Todd and Lynn

I have pulled some beautiful boards from a 100 yr old carriage house I have. I plan on using the boards for an accent wall in the kitchen, what would you normally do to make them less “splintery” without ruining their look? I’m nervous to send them thru the planer or to hit them with a sander. Do you ever justo leave them as is?
Thank you,
Joel

Hi Todd and Lynn,
Yes, absolutely, my favorite finish to use is a clear satin polyurethane. It does darken the wood a bit but not as much as others. The satin doesn’t make the wood shiny.
My best recommendation would be to save several scraps and test the finish you choose before you apply it to your project. If you don’t like the first one then try another finish until you get the look you are after.
In my experience though the clear satin polyurethane does the least amount of discoloration.
