Asked by Jamie from TN
Hello:
We are updating the exterior of our barn. There are living quarters on the 2nd floor of the gambrel barn and we are replacing two 38 x 50 windows. Do you think it’s best to use a dark bronze colored window (close to black) as opposed to the white vinyl? Wood windows are not in the budget. The new exterior wood is popular.
Additionally, would you use a silver colored roof to match our 12 year old home (although with oxidation it won’t be a perfect match) OR would you go with a black metal roof? My home is red so I don’t want a red roof or green.
Thanks,
Jamie
Hi Jamie,
Thank You for your question. I have found that white windows look good with the wood siding, I have also seen other colors used that work just as well. The only thing that I think would look bad is if you attempted to perfectly match the color of the window with the color of the wood. A stark contrast seems to work the best.
As for the roofing, I think whatever color suits your tastes will be best. If you are worried about matching your home, you might try to tie the color of the roof in with something else, maybe the shudders on your house or the siding?
I would stay away from a black metal roof if at all possible, you will be basicly turning your barn into a solar oven. That’s not going to be comfortable for anyone, humans or animals. The lighter the roof color the better it will reflect heat, the darker the color the more heat will be drawn in.
Thanks again for your question!
Have a great day!
