Asked by Elisabeth from Mill Hall, PA
We are considering renovating a wood timber frame barn (1830’s?) into a home. Foundation (field stone) is in disrepair. New foundation would be ideal. How is a new foundation built & is building a block cement foundation standard practice? Viewing a similar restoration would be great! Any websites out there? Thank you-great website!
foundations options post & beam homes
I have restored a few old homes by jacking them up and replacing with new concrete foundation. I wouldnt use concrete blocks poured concrete works better in northeast region with thawing and frost. I have several pics of these restorations that i have done you can contact me at [email protected] mark robitaille 603 455 6362 thank you
Thank you, great question!
This would be one that is difficult to answer without seeing the barn. The best advice I can give would be to contact a good local concrete or masonary contractor and see what they can do for you. It would be best if you could find a contractor who restores barns. There are more out there than you think.
Here is a place to start.

Give them a call or email and they should be able to point you towards a good barn restoration contractor.
