Question asked in the BarnGeeks Facebook Group 4/21/24

Does anybody have any recommendations of the best exterior coating for a 40×60 gambrel? Unfortunately the wood is not rough cut so it won’t absorb as well as all of the beams and the frame. I used iron oxide mixed with ferrous sulfate for all of the other wood but it doesn’t really have any kind of a UV or water protection capability. Any suggestions?

Cal

Response:

I prefer classic finishes like boiled linseed oil. I avoid poly because in my experience it flakes off, doesn’t penetrate well and just plain doesn’t work as advertised.
