Asked by Geno from Motown, MI
Hello Aaron,
Ironically – I am living in VT at the moment however originally from Ferndale, MI. I have a question about
barn restoration funding there in MI. My parents have a barn in Emmett. I wanted to look into restoration grants, and thought I’d start with you. Otherwise, We may just do a salvage on it, move it, and use the wood to build a timber frame redesign barn home.
Thoughts on this?

Could you outline what constitutes ” Historical Significance” for a restoration grant?
And who do you apply through?
Thanks- Interested Barn Owner

How do you know if your barn has any historical significance? We have a two story barn in fairly good shape but needs some foundation work.
Hi Geno,
Unfortunately there aren’t any grants available for barn restoration, unless your barn has some sort of historical significance. There are however property tax incentives for restoring an old barn that would help. You can find more information on that at the Michigan Barn Preservation Network
You can also find a list of barn restoration contractors there.
Thank You
